Famous in the eyewear industry for his unique designs, EQUE.M also stands out as founder of two luxury eyewear brands, the eponymous EQUE.M and TRESBIND. Both showcase products handmade in the Japanese city of Sabae, Fukui by local artisans, using exceptional Japanese materials and meticulous craftsmanship.

As a Japanese designer raised in the US and currently living in Orange County, California, he has been influenced and inspired by Western culture. Dauntless, innovative and a perfectionist, his passion for eyewear design was sparked at the tender age of 19, nurtured by the beautiful California sunshine and its market for sunglasses.

EQUE.M expresses himself fully through his namesake brand and its chic aesthetic. The brand EQUE.M inherited its concept from an earlier company he co-founded, Frency & Mercury, whose motto “Let yourself be as graceful as you are” encompasses a sense of eyewear not just as a functional accessory of quality but as a genuine expression of one’s self.

TRESBIND, the brand co-founded with Puyi Optical, has a more trendy, pop-driven aesthetic, with dynamic and adventurous designs that capture the ever-evolving essence of street fashion. The name itself is a fusion of TRES representing “three” , design, quality and function; and BIND, the union of these concepts, as well as the mutual relationship between Puyi Optical, the designer and the customer.

The two brands represent completely different approaches in contrasting styles, with EQUE.M highlighting the wearer’s unique personality while TRESBIND showcases its diverse influences.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE DESIGNER OF EQUE.M AND TRESBIND

In this issue of PUYI VIBES, we have invited the famous eyewear designer EQUE.M to talk to us about his story of eyewear brands creation.

As a designer, what eyewear styles do you personally like?

I love to wear the tear drop shades with bit of design point.

What are the details would you look into when designing an eyewear?

It depends on the collection concept, like our iconic Water Drop style, the idea came up at street under the heavy rain. The inspirations are mostly from our daily life. I also inspired a lot from many vintage stuffs.

What are the most challenging parts on eyewear design?

To make the eyewear fashionable with its highest quality is always challenging. Even 0.5mm differences on parts would have high impact on the overall feel and look. Detail orientation is one of the most important factor on eyewear design.

Can you share with us some preliminary idea of the upcoming collection?

A EQUE.M Kid Collection will be coming up next summer. As for EQUE.M and TRESBIND, we are planning to have more collaborations with fashion brands or artists.

Both EQUE.M and TRESBIND show off the designer’s boundless and inexhaustible creativity. As the internet slang would say, you can always rely on EQUE.M to bring it.
